Dance Together

Dancers ages 18 months – 3 years feel the beat and move their feet at these fun dance classes designed just for young children and their caregivers. Learn basic dance steps and bond with your tiny dancer in a 30-minute class. Dance Together I is a gentle yet energetic class and is a great opportunity for the adult and child to bond through the shared experience of movement and music.  Dance Together II helps children develop locomotor and basic movement skills, as well as social skills and creativity.

Younger babies can be worn in a baby carrier or held in the caregiver’s arms.  Toddlers may be worn in a baby carrier, as well as join hands with or dance independently alongside their caregiver.  All are welcome – no previous experience required. Classes are designed to be enjoyable, both for caregivers and young children.  (Expectant mamas are also welcome!)

Class Highlights:

  • Basic dance movements improve balance, motor skills, and coordination

  • Fun sensations, sights and sounds for babies and toddlers

  • Gentle stretches for relaxation and strength-building

  • Connect with your child & the community

“It’s only natural that dancing calms babies. Their whole uterine existence was a moving experience. Babies crave movement after birth because to them it is the norm. Being still disconcerts babies. They don’t understand it and it frightens them. Movement relaxes them.”

~ Dr. William Sears, MD, American pediatrician, author of more than 30 parenting books

Instructor – Autumn George (Dance Together I & II)

As a West Coast native, Autumn graduated from Western Oregon University with a BS in Dance.  After graduation and a deployment to Kuwait with the Oregon Army National Guard, Autumn began life as a Military wife and started the trek across country with her husband and two dogs.  After a few years in Arizona and Texas, The George’s settled in Elizabethtown with duty at Ft. Knox.  Autumn became an instructor at Louisville Ballet School in 2010 and the following year, she welcomed her first baby and newest dancing partner, Weston into the world.  Eager to share her love of dance with her son and everyone she meets, Autumn is excited to begin the Dance Together series.

Preparing for Class:

Adults: Gym clothes are best for caregivers as you will work up a light sweat. Wear supportive athletic shoes with clean, non-marking soles. A bottle of water is usually a good idea, too, but we do have a water fountain.

Toddlers: Toddlers should be dressed in lightweight clothing that promotes freedom of movement. They should wear non-slip shoes with clean, non-marking soles, or may dance with bare feet.  We recommend that dancers have a light snack and are well-hydrated prior to class.

Dance Together II students may also follow the Primary dress code: Primary Division girls wear a pink leotard, pink crepe skirt, plain white socks, and pink full-sole ballet slippers.  No tights, please.  Hair must be kept off the face and neck.  Long hair must be prepared in a neat bun secured with hairpins and hairnet. Boys wear a tight fitting white tank with black shorts, plain white socks, and black or white full-sole ballet shoes.

Babies: Babies should be dressed in layered clothing that is easy to take on and off since it can get a little toasty in a carrier. We recommend feeding your baby 30 minutes prior to class. A quiet and private space for feeding and changing adjacent to the dance studio is available.

Baby Carrier: A comfortable and secure baby carrier with support for baby and babywearer is highly recommended. Questions? Contact Shannon at Mama’s Hip (502.384.8805)
