Summer Dance Programs (Ages 3-16)

in our 2012 Summer Dance Programs!

June 11 – July 13

The Louisville Ballet School offers a distinguished youth program in dance.  Our youth workshops are designed to develop coordination, musicality, and kinetic awareness, as well as to instill a love for dance and the arts.  The experience and awareness instilled from participation in dance as a child will build skills valuable for a lifetime.

A variety of classes are available and all take place in our St. Matthews studios, located at 4121 Shelbyville Road.  Summer Dance Programs fill up rapidly, so please register early beginning March 1st to reserve your child’s place in class.  Payment in full or a minimum 50% tuition deposit is due upon registration, and the remainder is due on June 1st.

Performance Showcase Students will demonstrate class work learned during their session.  Parents, families, and friends are invited to join us on the last class scheduled each session for the Showcase at the St. Matthews Studios.

You are welcome to submit your Registration Form via email to school@louisvilleballet.org, by fax to 502.583.0006, in-person at our studios (please note Studio Hours) or by mail.  Please keep in mind that classes do tend to fill quickly, so please submit your registration early to reserve your child’s spot in class.


Level Placement Guidelines for Current LBS Students:

Movement and Make Believe (Level 1): Students enrolled in Creative Movement I and II, and first-year Pre-Ballet during the 2010-2011 school year.

Enchanted Journeys (Level 2): Students enrolled in second-year Pre-Ballet, and Beginning Ballet during the 2010-2011 school year.

Dance Discovery (Level 3): Students enrolled in Elementary I and II and Youth Ballet I during the 2010-2011 school year.

Young Dancer Intensive (Level 4): Students enrolled in Elementary III and IV and Youth Ballet II/III during the 2010-2011 school year.

The School reserves the right to determine the class level for every student, regardless of prior training.  Please contact the School if you are unsure of your student’s placement.


1Movement and Make Believe

(Level 1)

Ages 3-5

Children (ages 3-5) will discover an exciting mix of creative dance, arts and crafts, and narrative storytelling through movement – all inspired by the wonderful world around us.  Classes meet daily Monday – Friday.  No previous dance experience or placement audition is required!

The daily schedule for all sections of Level 1 consists of the following*: 30 minute dance class, 30 minute arts and crafts / enrichment / music, 30 minute rehearsal, 30 minute snack and restroom break. (Please pack a brown bag snack for your child.)  *Sample daily schedules are subject to change.

Class Attire: Appropriate class attire is required. Hair must be prepared in a neat bun prior to class time.  Short hair must be kept off the face and neck.  No watches or jewelry may be worn except small earrings.  Girls generally wear a solid-colored leotard, white socks and pink ballet shoes.  No tights, please.  Boys wear a tight-fitting white tank with black shorts and black or white ballet shoes and socks.

Enchanted Journeys

(Level 2)

Ages 6-8

Children (ages 6-8) will explore a blend of creative dance and pre-ballet exercises along with visual art projects, music, and rhythm.  Classes meet daily Monday – Friday.  No previous dance experience or placement audition is required!

The daily schedule for all sections of Level 2 consists of the following*: 1 hour dance class, 1 hour arts and crafts / enrichment / music, 30 minute snack (brown bag), 45 minute rehearsal, 15 minute break. (Please pack a brown bag snack for your child)  *Sample daily schedules are subject to change.

Class Attire: Appropriate class attire is required. Hair must be prepared in a neat bun prior to class time.  Short hair must be kept off the face and neck.  No watches or jewelry may be worn except small earrings.  Girls generally wear a solid-colored leotard, white socks and pink ballet shoes.  No tights, please.  Boys wear a tight-fitting white tank with black shorts and black or white ballet shoes and socks.

Leaps and Bounds Workshop for Boys

Ages 8-13

Introducing a fun mix of current dance styles and classical technique just for boys who love to dance!  Students will learn funky choreography and cool tricks that are sure to impress your friends as well as improve rhythm and coordination.  Class meets daily Monday—Friday. ($10 discount available if student registers for another Summer Session program.)

Class Attire: Appropriate class attire is required. Young men wear a black unitard, or tights and white tee shirt, dance belt and black or white ballet shoes.

Dance Discovery Workshop

(Level 3)

Ages 8-13

Children (ages 8-13) with prior dance experience have an opportunity to explore the fundamentals of ballet as well as try additional dance styles including modern, mime, character dance and Pilates. Dancers discover the art of storytelling through dance while sharing in the traditions of the story ballets. Choose either two-week session, or consider taking all four weeks at a discounted rate. Classes meet daily Monday – Friday.

The schedule for all sections of Level 3 consists of the following*: 1 hour Ballet Technique, 30 minute Variations, 30 minute Lunch (brown bag), 30 minute Enrichment, 1 hour Repertoire,  30 minute Enrichment, 1 hour Character / Modern / Pilates/Conditioning *Sample daily schedules are subject to change.

Class Attire: Appropriate class attire is required. Hair must be prepared in a neat bun prior to class time.  Short hair must be kept off the face and neck.  No watches or jewelry may be worn except small earrings.  Girls generally wear a solid-colored leotard, pink tights and pink ballet shoes.  No skirts, please.  Boys wear a tight-fitting white tee shirt or leotard, black tights with dance belt and black or white ballet shoes.  Character shoes are also recommended.


4Young Dancer Intensive Workshop

(Level 4)

Ages 11-16

Dancers (ages 11-16) with previous dance training have an opportunity to dive into a two-week session of dance.  Ever wonder what it is like to be a professional dancer?  Students will join in the grand tradition of classical ballet repertoire by learning dances that have been performed by professional ballet dancers for hundreds of years.  Students also explore contemporary dance styles to enhance strength and versatility. Daily classes in ballet, modern, character, Classical Repertoire and Pilates will take dancers to new heights! Choose either two-week session, or consider taking all four weeks at a discounted rate.  Classes meet daily Monday – Friday.

The schedule for all sections of Level 4 consists of the following*: 1 hour 30 minute Ballet Technique, 30 minute Pointe and Variations, 30 minute Lunch (brown bag), 30 minute Enrichment, 1 hour Repertoire, 30 minute Enrichment, 1 hour Character / Modern / Pilates/Conditioning  *Sample daily schedules are subject to change.

Class Attire: Appropriate class attire is required. Hair must be prepared in a neat bun prior to class time.  Short hair must be kept off the face and neck.  No watches or jewelry may be worn except small earrings.  Young ladies generally wear a solid-colored leotard, pink tights and pink ballet shoes (pre-pointe or pointe shoes for pointe class).  The instructor must check all new shoes before elastics or ribbons are sewn. No skirts, please.  Young men wear a black unitard, or tights and white tee shirt, dance belt and black or white ballet shoes.  Character shoes are also recommended.
