Add Louisville Ballet’s Robert Curran to the record of those who have reimagined the iconic ballet “Swan Lake” with its lush score from Tchaikovsky, beautifully played by the Louisville Orchestra on Friday night.
While Curran’s choreography remained true to the ballet’s tradition with much of it rooted it in the oldest version created by Marius Petipa and Lev Ivanov, it also seamlessly fused it with a narrative set in another time against a scenic design created entirely by lasers and other lights.
Those designs, created by scenic designers Ryan Daly and Garret Crabtree, created lines of colors that framed the dancers and often expanded into wide swaths of light. At times, that light was animated as it contained gently swirling and illuminated fog.
