Kindergarten students at Lowe Elementary School are using curriculum-based dance to benefit their health and education.

The Anthem Healthy Living Through the Arts program provides students across Kentucky with transformative dance experiences to help them learn.

“All the kids have gotten an experience to get instruction in breathing, in stretching and all sorts of movement, dance and cross lateral movement,” said Lowe Elementary School Principal Austin Allain.

Students work with the Louisville Ballet School to explore movement across a five-part artistic journey that combines elements of dance and social studies curriculum to create, connect and produce cultural dances.

“Science has proven that dancing can make you smarter,” Stacey Blakeman, of the Louisville Ballet, said. “So we actually start every class out with something called the brain dance.”

Lowe Elementary students participated in the program for one week.

The Fund for the Arts received a $50,000 grant from Anthem Blue Cross Blue Shield to help fund the program.
