Louisville Ballet names Anthony Krutzkamp as new Artistic Director

August 14, 2025 LOUISVILLE, KY — Louisville Ballet is proud to announce the appointment of Anthony Krutzkamp as its new Artistic Director, effective October 1. A nationally recognized artistic leader, choreographer, and former principal dancer, Krutzkamp was selected following a rigorous national search process. Krutzkamp joins Louisville Ballet from Sacramento Ballet, a nearly 70-year-old professional company recognized for its innovative programming and community impact. Serving as Artistic and Executive Director since 2021, Krutzkamp has led the 20-member company through a period of significant growth and revitalization. He first joined Sacramento Ballet in 2018 as Artistic Director and was appointed to the dual role of Artistic and Executive Director in 2021, overseeing not only the company’s creative vision but also its operations, fundraising, and strategic direction. “I am thrilled to welcome Anthony Krutzkamp to Louisville Ballet,” said Leslie Smart, CEO. “His artistic vision is inspiring and deeply rooted in tradition, community, and innovation. Just as important, his experience as both an artistic and executive leader makes him an invaluable partner as we work together to shape Louisville Ballet’s future.” During his tenure, Krutzkamp expanded Sacramento Ballet’s reach through new initiatives, launched a second company, achieved record-breaking ticket sales, and strengthened the organization’s financial health, including establishing its first endowment. Under his leadership, the company premiered a new Nutcracker, and participated in international festivals such as Germany’s Bremerhaven International Summer Gala. As Artistic Director of Louisville Ballet, Krutzkamp will be responsible for shaping the company’s artistic vision, curating and choreographing productions, guiding and mentoring dancers, and collaborating closely with the entire staff. His experience in performing arts leadership will also enable him to work in partnership with Louisville Ballet CEO Leslie Smart in strategic planning, fundraising, and cultivating community partnerships, which are vital as the company prepares to celebrate its 75th anniversary season in 2026–2027. “Anthony brings the perfect combination of world-class artistry, visionary programming, and proven leadership,” said K. Shaver, Louisville Ballet Board President. “His experience leading Sacramento Ballet through both artistic and organizational transformation uniquely positions him to help Louisville Ballet thrive as we approach our 75th anniversary season.” A Kentucky native, Krutzkamp is a former Principal Dancer with Cincinnati Ballet, where he performed leading roles in Sleeping Beauty, Cinderella, Swan Lake, Romeo & Juliet, and numerous George Balanchine works. He has appeared internationally as a guest artist in Japan and across Europe, and his choreography has been commissioned by companies including Sacramento Ballet, Kansas City Ballet, and Nashville Ballet. He co-founded the Kansas City Dance Festival and Moving Arts Cincinnati, and has been recognized by Dance Magazine and Pointe for innovation. Krutzkamp holds a B.S. in Business Management with High Honors from Northeastern University and a Certificate from Cornell University. “It’s an honor to return home to Kentucky and join a company with such a rich history, passionate artists, and deep community connections,” said Krutzkamp. “I’m excited to build on Louisville Ballet’s legacy while embracing new voices, bold ideas, and innovative collaborations.” Krutzkamp is married to Jill, a former dancer with Cincinnati Ballet and Kansas City Ballet. They have two young daughters and are looking forward to making Louisville their home. Krutzkamp will join Louisville Ballet at the beginning of its 2025-2026 season, which was selected by Artistic Directors Mikelle Bruzina and Harald Uwe Kern. Kern is now Director of the School of Ballet San Antonio. Bruzina will continue to serve the company, remaining an integral part of the Ballet’s artistic leadership team.
