Louisville Ballet is delighted to offer our sensory friendly performance of The Brown-Forman Nutcracker! Experience this magical holiday tradition in a specially designed atmosphere that is comfortable, inclusive and safe for individuals who have sensory sensitivities.

In collaboration with several community partners, Louisville Ballet has made appropriate accommodations to the performance and theatre-going experience to make individuals with special needs feel welcome. Our second annual Sensory Friendly performance is made possible in part by Mimi & Marshall Heuser.

Choreography by Val Caniparoli
Music by Pyotr IIyich Tchaikovsky
Scenic + Costume Design by Peter Cazalet

The performance will include excerpts from both Acts 1 & 2 of The Brown-Forman Nutcracker. Lobby doors open at 9:30 am and the theater doors open at 11:00 am.

An interactive slide show will be playing in the theater prior to the start performance with several fun facts about ballet and The Brown-Forman Nutcracker. Additionally, there will be a 15-minute intermission between Act 1 and Act 2.

What makes our performance Sensory Friendly?

Seating is general admission and not sold to capacity; therefore, audience members can select their own seats with room to move.

Patrons are allowed to move freely through the aisles.

Individuals are free to vocalize.

House lights remain on at low level.

Some loud sounds or startling moments are omitted; others are signaled to the audience in advance.

Entering and exiting the theatre is allowed.

A quiet room with limited seating at the back of the theatre provides continued viewing, away from the audience.

Additional quiet space is provided in the Mary Anderson room completely away from the theatre.

Other things to note:

Our Nutcracker Gift Shop will be selling gifts and souvenirs in the North Lobby.

Manual flush toilets are available near the Mary Anderson Room. All other restrooms have automatic flush toilets.

Drinks from concession are allowed in the theater. Food should be eaten in the lobby area before entering the theater.

A printed picture schedule will be available in the performance program.

The Social Narrative and What to Expect documents can be downloaded as a PDF to be printed at home.

A limited number of Sensory Friendly bags are available to be checked out at the Coat Check.

There will be a Tactile Table available in the lobby before the show and during intermission where items including costume elements and pointe shoes are available to touch and explore.

Rows E – N will be marked with a snowflake and snow will fall on them at the end of Act 1.

Although these performances are adapted specifically to accommodate individuals with sensory sensitivities, the general public is welcome.
