Classical Ballet Program

Classical Ballet Program students continue to develop coordination, musicality, and kinetic awareness while building upon skills learned in the Children’s Program. In a more structured class environment, the instructors nurture the students’ love for dance and the arts through the disciplined study of classical ballet technique. Students are placed into the Classical Ballet Program based on their age at the start of the school year and level of dance experience. Placement is for the entire school year, including the summer session. Classes are held at the St. Matthews Studios.

All Classical Ballet Program students are invited to participate in the Spring Dance Festival. Weekly rehearsals will be held during a dedicated rehearsal period by level.

Classical Ballet I (Ages 6 – 7)

One Weekly Class $470 per semester ($117.50 per month with 4 Monthly Payments)

Students in Classical Ballet I build the physical maturity needed to learn ballet technique. Exercises facing the barre are introduced to develop core strength, alignment, control, and balance. Center work exercises promote flexibility, stability, and coordination. Students at the Classical Ballet I level generally attend one ballet technique class, but have the option to enroll in two technique classes at a discounted rate. Additionally, Jazz/Tap 1 is recommended for CB I – III level students wishing to build upon their rhythmical skills introduced in Pre-Ballet. Students will receive a 25% discount on Jazz/Tap 1.

Classical Ballet II (Ages 7 – 9)

Two Weekly Classes $560 per semester ($140 per month with 4 Monthly Payments)

Students in Classical Ballet II continue to develop the physical maturity needed to learn ballet technique. Exercises facing the barre and in the center continue to develop flexibility, core strength, alignment, control, balance, and coordination. Students’ developing maturity facilitates a greater demand in terms of vocabulary, technical execution and artistry. Classical Ballet II students are invited to register for one elective class per semester from the Complementary Program. Students will receive a 25% discount on their elective class.

Classical Ballet III (Ages 8+ with at least one year of experience, Placement Class Required for Ages 9+)

Two Weekly Classes $640 per semester ($160 per month with 4 Monthly Payments)

Students in Classical Ballet III build on the technique learned in Classical Ballet II. Exercises with one hand at the barre are introduced as students continue to develop core strength, alignment, control, and balance. Simple enchaȋnement are introduced and the repetition of barre work in the center promotes coordination, flexibility, and concentration. Classical Ballet III students are invited to register for one elective class per semester from the Complementary Program. Students will receive a 25% discount on their elective class.

Classical Ballet IV (Placement Class Required)

Two Weekly Classes $640 per semester ($160 per month with 4 Monthly Payments)

Through continued repetition and development of the knowledge learned in previous levels, Classical Ballet IV students’ maturing body awareness and concentration facilitates improved core strength, alignment, control, and balance during barre and center work. Enchaȋnement become more complex to nurture students’ artistic development. Classical Ballet IV will begin attending classes in a systematic manner with their first class of the week falling on Tuesday or Thursday and second class of the week falling on Saturday. This allows level IV students to better grasp material, learned together in a smaller class setting at the beginning of the week with faster execution and mastery of material during their second class of the week. Classical Ballet IV students are invited to register for one or multiple elective classes from the Complementary Program per semester. Students will receive a 25% discount on their first elective class and a 50% discount on any additional elective classes.

Classical Ballet V (Placement Class Required)

Three Weekly Technique Classes with Pre-Pointe $760 per semester ($190 per month with 4 Monthly Payments)

In a more rigorous class environment, the instructors nurture the students’ love for dance and the arts through a more disciplined study of classical ballet technique. Pre-pointe work is introduced at this level in preparation for transition into the upper Classical Ballet levels or the Pre-Professional Program. Classical Ballet V students are also encouraged to register for at least one Complementary Program class per semester. Students will receive a 25% discount on their first elective class and a 50% discount on any additional elective classes.

Continuing in a structured curriculum, students in these levels work to increase skill, endurance, and discipline, as well as technical and artistic progress. Pointe work may be introduced for students meeting the requirements of age, physical development, and satisfactory skill and knowledge of classical ballet technique. Classical Ballet VI students are encouraged to register for at least one elective class per semester from the Complementary Program.  Students will receive a 25% discount on their first elective class and a 50% discount on any additional elective classes.

Weekly Repertoire Class $90 per semester

Classical Ballet VI students are invited to enroll in a weekly repertoire class where they will rehearse for material performed in the LBYE Fall Showcase during the fall semester and Spring Collection as part of Spring Dance Festival in the spring semester. Students who enroll in repertoire must be available for all rehearsals and performance dates.

Continuing in a structured curriculum, students in these levels work to increase skill, endurance, and discipline, as well as technical and artistic progress. Continuing pointe work for these students add knowledge, skill and prowess so the dancers start to feel comfortable in their shoes and dancing on pointe. Classical Ballet VII – IX students are strongly encouraged to register for at least one elective class per semester from the Complementary Program. Students will receive a 25% discount on their first elective class and a 50% discount on any additional elective classes.

Dress Code

The student dress code maintains the tradition and aesthetic of classical ballet and allows instructors to see the full lines of the students’ bodies. As such, all students must wear the required uniform colors and styles.  View the Uniform Page for more detailed uniform requirements for each level. Required styles and colors are reasonably priced and will be available for purchase through The Louisville Ballet School.
